The picture is from the fourth Skylab mission.

The Russians have totally stomped NASA for volume - they've orbited five of the seven manned space stations, and they've been primary transit for the last two. And one of 'em had a fucking cannon.

Another area the Soviet space program has kept the lead? Venus.

I <3 the space program.

----on Venus.......---

Most interesting! The Russians have expended a lot of expense and resources on Venus while the U.S. has went in the other direction (Mars and beyond)!! The U.S. has already humiliated the Russians by achieving manned flights to the moon! But this was back during the days of the Cold War.

So what's up with Venus that our former adversaries have put so much time and effort into??? Sure, we sent a few probes in that direction, but evidently our scientists must have said "....ain't no big deal." The Russians obviously think otherwise! Keep in mind that the last probe to Venus the Russians sent up was in '85, (which is when they were the Soviet Union and before they became the current Russian Republic.... they are now a country still trying to fight their way out of bankruptcy!)

Not to mention that the Russians are currently providing taxi service to the International Space Station in the form of the old tried & true Soyuz! The Chinese have already achieved orbital space flight, plus I understand that the Japanese are throwing their hat into the ring!!! I seem to remember hearing something about the (South) Koreans having a serious interest in this area, but I won't comment on it.

The great science fiction author Isaac Asimov had said that if mankind is EVER going to get off this planet and colonize other worlds, it will have to be an international effort.

This appears to be the direction that things are going!
