More on Year Zero

Previously slammed in paragraph two of this entry.

02:26 <@bda> blah.
02:23 <@bda> http://symphonyofnoise.com/nails/yearzero/ # Another NIN track.
02:26 <@bda> solios: You're right. Prog rock.
02:27 < solios> like I said on dcr: [it's] is a lot like going to plaid, in that it's a cute special effect and a horrible, horrible joke told by somebody in shiny pants.
02:27 <@bda> That almost made sense.
02:28 < solios> it's a Spaceballs joke. ;p
02:29 <@bda> No, I got that. :P
02:29 <@bda> Fuck, this song sucks.
02:29 <@bda> I hope this whole ARG thing and the leaked tracks are jokes.
02:29 <@bda> But I doubt it.
02:29 < solios> The nice thing about this kind of viral marketing is they can write it off if it doesn't pan out.
02:30 <@bda> Eh?
02:31 < solios> well, if _everyone_ thinks the "leaked" tracks etc. suck ass, then they won't need to bother with a release.
02:32 <@bda> ha.
02:32 <@bda> That sounds likely as likely as it being a farce. :)
02:32 <@bda> Or being INTENTIONALLY a farce.
02:33 < solios> my experience with prog rock is that the musicians have overdosed on their egos and proceed to choke themselves to death with the musical equivalent of autoerotic asphyxiation.
02:33 < solios> (>.<)
02:34 <@bda> Yes.
02:34 <@bda> blah.
02:35 < solios> man, if YOU think it sucks...
02:37 <@bda> Hey, fuck you.
02:37 < solios> shut up and take the left-handed complement. ;p
BSG : Sucking less without Starbuck.

21:05 <@bda> solios: That was a good ep.
21:05 <@bda> Finally.
21:05 <@bda> Not just good because the previous ones were blah, but actually good.
21:06 < solios> yes.
21:06 < solios> I also like the previous ep.
21:07 <@bda> Took it about 30m to ramp up.
21:07 < solios> yeah
21:07 < solios> I think of it as shedding the suck of early midseason.
21:07 * solios hopes, hopes, hopes.
21:07 < solios> bsg++
21:07 <@bda> Heh.
21:08 <@bda> awl ur dreemz dashed on teh rocks of holywoodz
21:08 < solios> fuckin hollywoodz
21:08 <@bda> no no u newb
21:08 < solios> maybe they'll remake Space : 1999 next.
21:08 <@bda> holywoodz
21:08 <@bda> asdf

Yes, I know Starbuck was in the episode. But it was brief and more of a S1/S2 Thrace as opposed to the Sucking The Show Down The Tubes bs of early-mid season 3. Boy am I glad that's over with.

I've gotten stuck in a ~10pm-~3pm wake cycle. Not entirely sure how that happened, but it has a lot to do with bus scheduling and the fact that it's technologically impossible to do any work at home and I'm very, very not into meat-people right now.

Pic related.

Hope to be back to normal by this time next week - I like the idea of updating ATC and then going home to sleep. My sense of accomplishment prefers that to updating ATC and then doing work-work for another six or seven hours.

Boned.

ppac_14_front_web.jpg

The last time I did any work on this thing was in December. Since I'd rather move on to bigger and badder (read : worse) noise, i figured it's time to stick a fork in it and move on with my life.

Seemed the right thing to do after bda informed me that Nails (who've done nothing of awesome in years) have gone to prog. Which is a lot like going to plaid, in that it's a cute special effect and a horrible, horrible joke told by somebody in shiny pants.

Maybe Trent will follow in the steps of Fear Factory - release a techno-industrial remix thing after the Concept Album, then transition into a shitty "nu-metl" (or whatever the fuck) band, ditch the core audience and proceed to wander around aimlessly with an ever-growing list of ex-keyboardists.

I doubt it, but I've got a lot of bile (Tool's gone to shit, Nails isn't industrial anymore, Fear Factory and KMFDM haven't done anything listenable or noteworthy ["continuing to suck like a hoover" isn't noteworthy], and thank Gid the most recent FLA album is listenable, etc, etc), and no actual musical ability. So.

Track List

01. Club Dance Beat 013.5 : Staticy beats-and-clank. The beats are completely canned; the clank and static are not.

02. Godflush (Monogastric) : Remix. Excised some of the shittier high end bits that were driving me nuts.

03. Pisspower (Boned Mix) : Grindier remix of PISSPOWER.

04. Stress Fracture : The manditory semi-ambient noise track.

05. The Digital Vats Of Urine : Heavily distorted piss. Plus beats. There's a single beat right after the fadeout - rather than go through all the fucking hassle of trimming it (and recompressing it, and retagging it, and reuploading it, and resyncing the ipod), I'm hereby calling the shortest motherfucking bonus track, ever. Yes.

Onward and upward - though probably not until I'm back on antidepressants, considering I haven't done fuckall with PPAC since I pissed out the last of the happy pills.

The mp3s are in the usual place.

Courtesy of waltman in #215 : Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller to play modern, "updated" Hardy boys.

Yay. A celebrity the media insists I haven't had enough of and an actor I don't like taking a dump on a book series that I loved as a kid. I'm not sure which is worse- this or the casting information for the alleged Magnum PI movie.

Actually, eonline's fappishly fawning prose wins for "worse," but that's par for the course.

Also.

FF6 Advance has a totally bullshit error.
02.13 at 22:03 | comments (0)

Before actually loading the game:

13:06 < solios> wtf.
13:07 < solios> the FF6A manual doesn't have Sabin's blitzs.
13:07 < solios> there's a bullet-point that sez "see the in-game menu"
13:07 < solios> gay!
13:07 <@ejp> that means the manual writers had no idea what the game people would settle on
13:08 < solios> heh.
13:08 < solios> possibly.
13:08 <@ejp> it decouples the production pipeline, resulting in increased synergy.

Around 90 minutes in, Eric is proven right:

18:33 < solios> two FF6A annoyances:
18:33 < solios> 1. it has the Japanese encounter rate. Or I remember the encounter rate being a fuckton lower than it is.
18:34 < solios> 2. Like FF4 and FF5, slowdown at weird points.
18:35 < mdxi> 6 is out? crap!
18:35 < solios> last week.
18:39 < solios> also!
18:40 < solios> the Vargas fight?
18:40 < solios> where he doesn't die until you use a blitz?
18:40 < solios> the blitz commands aren't in the manual.
18:40 < solios> the manual says "go look at the in-game menu"
18:40 < solios> but you can't get to it until after the Vargas fight.
18:43 < mdxi> ...

See, in the original "Final Fantasy III" release for the SNES, all of Sabin's blitz commands are in the manual. So if you had the manual lying around and had read it, you'd know what to do. The SNES manual is much bigger than the GBA equivalent: I remember this because after buying the game (but before I was able to play it) I had time to read the manual cover-to-cover sitting in the truck while mom was grocery shopping. I picture the manual in my head and it's sodium orange.

I haven't played FF6 since high school. Blitz inputs are the kind of thing that's slipped through the cracks.

Fortunately, the quickie-blitz (left-right-left) hasn't changed. Any blitz that used the X and Y buttons now uses the L and R.

I'm assuming they may have compensated for this by including some mention of it after Vargas pounds on you for awhile in-battle, but I'll be fucked if I'm going to wait around and find out.

This Obviously Bullshit QA Error and other issues* aside, FF6 is still a fantastic game.

frankbuchwald.jpg

Lighting fixtures by Frank Buchwald. 17 kilos might be a bit heavy for a lamp, but it's fuckin' industrial. I want one, dammit. (src=_Lasar)

While we're on the subject, bda linked this earlier in the day:

quantum_computer_thing.jpg

From Jurvetson's flickr photostream description:

This is the core of a new quantum computer attached to Leiden Cryogenics dilution fridge, ready to begin a cool down to 0.005 degrees above absolute zero… about 500x colder than the coldest place in remote outer space..

There's more. Go read it, it's awesome. And unlike the Industrial Lighting, it's in english. Huzzah.

Purple And Brown, which I first encountered at Cartoon Brew yesterday. Early Henson meets Beavis & Butthead. Aardman for the win. Roflcopters.
